All About Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen is a renowned Norwegian outdoor and workwear clothing brand with a rich history spanning more than 140 years. Established in 1877 by sea captain Helly Juell Hansen, the company has evolved from its humble beginnings as a producer of waterproof oilskin jackets for sailors into a global leader in performance and protective apparel for various outdoor activities and industries.

Here are some key aspects of Helly Hansen’s history and identity:

1. Maritime Roots: Helly Hansen’s initial success came from its innovative oilskin jackets, which were designed to keep fishermen and sailors dry in the harshest of conditions. The company’s commitment to protecting those who work at sea has been a foundational principle throughout its history.

2. Three-Layer System: Helly Hansen is widely recognized for its revolutionary three-layer system, which consists of a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof and windproof outer layer. This system, introduced in the 1970s, revolutionized outdoor clothing by providing superior protection against the elements.

3. Technical Innovation: Helly Hansen is known for its dedication to innovation. The brand consistently develops and integrates cutting-edge technologies into its products. Examples include the H2Flow™ temperature-regulating system, LIFA® Stay Dry Technology, and the HELLY TECH® waterproof membrane.

4. Expanding Product Line: While the company’s roots are in maritime wear, it has expanded its product range to include a wide variety of outdoor and workwear gear, including skiwear, hiking apparel, and high-performance clothing for professionals in demanding industries such as construction, oil and gas, and search and rescue.

5. Sustainability Initiatives: Helly Hansen has recognized the importance of sustainability in the modern world. They have taken steps to minimize their environmental impact by using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and ensuring ethical production practices.

6. Brand Endorsements: Over the years, Helly Hansen has gained the trust of professional athletes, explorers, and adventurers. Many prominent athletes and teams in sailing, skiing, and outdoor sports proudly wear Helly Hansen gear, solidifying the brand’s reputation for high performance.

7. Global Presence: Helly Hansen has a strong global presence, with products available in over 40 countries worldwide. It has flagship stores, retail partners, and a robust online presence, making its products accessible to a wide range of customers.

In summary, Helly Hansen is a company with a rich history and a commitment to providing high-quality outdoor and workwear apparel that is both functional and stylish. Its innovative approach to product development, dedication to protecting against the elements, and embrace of sustainability have cemented its status as a respected and trusted brand in the outdoor and professional workwear markets. Here are a few short videos about some of Helly Hansen’s great products….

The Verglas Polar Down Jacket

This is one of the warmest jackets that I have ever worn.  It is also loaded with many nice features.   This jacket is perfect for many mountain activities, and even city use.
The Loke Shell Jacket
A very popular lightweight shell that uses HELLY TECH  to keep you dry and block the wind.  It is also a very breathable jacket, that is perfect for just about any outdoor activity.

The Banff Insulated Shell Jacket

This jacket use Helly Tech construction to keep it waterproof and windproof.  Combine that with some insulation, and you have a great all-round jacket for hiking and even skiing.  The jacket is quite “roomy”, so there is plenty of room for layering under it, as well as allowing you a lot of unrestricted mobility.
Odin Pro Shield Hybrid Softshell Jacket
A unique combination of a fleece and a water/ wind resistant softshell.  A technical piece that has many nice features.  This is a favorite of mine.  It can be worn as a fleece under other layers, wear it over layers, or even just as a stand alone jacket.

Helly Hansen is also known for their Sailing  and Skiing Apparel too!
