Patagonia produces several different types of fleece jackets. Each is a bit different from the other. They come in different weights, and are made from different materials. We will explore what Patagonia has to offer, and hopefully help you to choose the right one for you and your uses. All are designed for outdoor uses and activities, but some are more technical then others. All are great for casual use too.
First of all, let’s look at the Better Sweater. This is a very popular, heavier weight fleece that is soft and warm. A great all-round fleece for extra warmth and comfort in colder conditions as well as just casual wear. It fits a bit loose, as it gives you room for movement when you need it. It is really useful as an extra layer under an insulated jacket.

To the left is the R1 TechFace fleece. This jacket is made for high output activities, and features a breathable fabric that has a DWR coating to repel light rain. It also has some wind resisting capabilities. A more technical piece for various mountain uses.
The R1 shown here to the right and on top of this page, is a technical fleece that is designed for high output activities, as it is very breathable. It features a warm, and soft fabric that has a cool looking pattern. It can be a great piece under other layers.

The two jackets shown above are very similar in fabric. The Microdini to the left is a bit lighter than the Synchilla Snap-T on the right. Both are very warm and soft, but the fit is different. The synchilla is a bigger sized piece, that will allow for extra layers under it, or, if you just require a larger, fuller sizing. Both are very simple pieces that only have a chest pocket. They are also nice under other layers, or just casual around town or at home.

The Retro Pile Jacket is as soft and warm as it gets. This is a favorite piece of mine, as it just feels and fits great. It’s like wearing a sheep’s wool. It has a thicker pile, but not too thick. It’s just perfect for so many uses. The zippers are nice too, strong and sturdy. Like most other fleeces, they are best worn under another layer since they will allow cool wind from the outside to pass through. But when worn under a light shell or insulated jacket, these pieces are awesome.

Finally, to the left is the Classic Retro-X jacket. Although this is more of a jacket than a fleece. I am including it here in this fleece jacket article, because it looks like a fleece. This jacket has a unique “shag carpet” like outer fabric, but it’s real important feature is it’s wind blocking membrane on the inside of the jacket. This feature makes it warmer, and windproof (which most other fleeces are not). It is sized a bit larger for room to layer under it, where as most fleeces are worn under other jackets. Any nice fleece can be worn under this for extra warmth.
All of these Patagonia fleece jackets are very useful, and each has it’s own unique features. A nice selection of choices to fit your needs.
