Why Choose Maui Jim...
This article is a guide to help you understand what Maui Jim sunglasses are all about, and help you to understand your choices in frames and lenses. Ultimately, helping you to choose which sunglasses from Maui Jim are right for you and your needs. For more information on Maui Jim sunglasses, check out my YouTube Channel Me And My Jackets for full length videos on Maui Jim lenses, as well as many popular Maui Jim models.
First, let’s talk about what makes Maui Jim sunglasses special. The biggest thing that they are known for is their amazing lenses. The lenses are designed with their own Polarized Plus 2 technology, which not only eliminated all of the glare, but it also reduces 100% of dangerous UV, and enhances colors and clarity. All this gives you an amazing view with vivid colors, contrast , clarity, and reduces fatigue on your eyes. The end result is a comfortable view of the world around you with much less stress on your eyes.
The frames that these lenses sit in are available in so many different styles and colors. Everything for men and women, from rimless designs, aviators, classic styles, wrap around styles, fashion styles, cats eyes, rectangular, and luxury Frames. The frames are built to last, with high quality materials, and hinges.
Each model of glasses has it’s own Hawaiian name, and each style has many different models. Each model is a bit different in size. The length and height of the lens, the size of the nose bridge, and the length of the temple arm. All of the specific sizes for each model can be found on the Maui Jim Website. Another measurement to take note of, is the curve of the frame. Does the frame lay flat across the front of your face, or does it wrap around your face more? The best way to know what size is right for you, is to actually try them on. The sizes are marked on the inside of the frame, so you can know for reference what size fits you best.
The Lenses
The lenses have three coatings on them, two on the front and one on the backside of the lens. On the front there is a hydrophobic coating that helps to resist moisture. Rain and sweat will roll off the lens. There is also a oleophobic coating which helps to resist grease and dirt from fingerprints. These two coatings help you to keep your glasses clean. On the back is an anti-reflective coating to eliminate reflections on the back of the lens. Very often their sunglasses also have a bi-gradient, or a gradient lens. The original Maui Jim Bi-Gradient mirror is applied to the top and bottom of the lens. The mirror squints for you to reduce the brightest light from above and below, allowing your eyes to relax. MauiGradient was developed as a stylish alternative to the Bi-Gradient mirror. A darker application at the top that gradually gets lighter moving down the lens so the appropriate amount of light is allowed to filter through certain areas.
All Maui Jim glasses naturally provide a high level of scratch resistance. They enhance their durability and long-term performance by applying a proprietary CLEARSHELL® treatment to both the front and back of the lens.
As I mentioned earlier, Maui Jim lenses are known to be some of the best in the world. They are available in five different types of materials.
- Super Thin Glass: This is the SuperThin Glass provides the absolute crispest optics available. 32% thinner and lighter than standard glass, it offers the best scratch resistance.
- Maui Brilliant: Maui Jim’s most advanced lens material that features optics nearly as clear as glass with just one-third of the weight.
- Maui Pure: Our most popular lens material. It combines optics almost as crisp as SuperThin Glass with ultra lightweight and excellent scratch and shatter resistance.
- Maui Evolution: Maui Evolution leverages the best properties of SuperThin Glass and polycarbonate to create a high index, lightweight, scratch and impact resistant material.
- Maui Pure LT: MauiPure LT is lighter and 35% thinner than standard MauiPure, and delivers optics nearly as clear as SuperThin Glass with exceptional impact and scratch resistance.
These different materials come in several different colors. Their are four base colors:
- Neutral Grey: Your typical “Black Lens”. This offers the highest light reduction, for the richest colors and highest contrast. These are great in bright, direct sunlight.
- HCL Bronze: This lens has a gold-brown appearance. HCL stands for “High Contrast Lens”. It provides a beautiful, warm tint, and is great for varied everyday conditions.
- Maui Rose: Provides a subtle rose/pink tint with the highest possible contrast, that’s great for fast moving sports, as well as moving in and out of shady areas.
- Maui HT: “High Transmission”, A lighter olive green colored lens that allows the most light through. Best for lower light situations, cloudy overcast days, and nice for driving. This lens is also recommended for golf!
There are also four different colored mirrors that are offered and set on top of the four basic colors.
- Blue Hawaii: A vibrant blue mirror set on top of The neutral grey lens.
- Maui Green: A green mirror set on top of the neutral grey lens.
- Hawaii Lava: A striking red mirror set on top of the HCL Bronze lens.
- Maui Sunrise: One of my favorites. A orange to pink burst mirror set on top of the Maui Rose lens.
One thing to keep in mind, is that the color of the mirror is not the color that you will see while looking through the lenses. To see what your view will be through each of these eight different colored lenses, see the videos on Maui Jim lenses on my YouTube Channel:
